Cardiff
as a port city is no doubt a hub of gaming, from sailors of
old introducing new card games to people of all ages with
their networked X-boxes. Games are an opportunity for social
mixing, a place for private imaginations to bloom. Although
digital gaming is an industry that now dwarfs Hollywood, young
adults are returning to card games as a pastime -- perhaps
for the warmth of human interaction that Playstation may never
supplant.
Artists Grennan and Sperandio, as invited guests, have invented
a new card game for Cardiff. The game that we're making will
has unique blend of rules - and is fun to play. The identity
of the game is drawn from our interactions and exchanges with
folks from all over. This new game is intended as a mirror
and a portrait of Cardiff, an ancient and thriving capital.
The game's working title is DWYN, the Welsh word for take,
redound or produce. We've imagined DWYN as a very active game
with lots of card swapping. The game has several fixed components.
DWYN is a six suited deck, the suits are divided into three
colors, red, black and green. In addition to plain numbered
cards, the figures represented in each suit are drawn from
Welsh history and popular culture.
